Darius Slay has been one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks for the better part of a decade. Six Pro Bowls, an All-Pro nod, a Super Bowl ring. The guy knows what he’s talking about when it comes to playing on an island.

So when Slay dropped his personal Mount Rushmore of current NFL cornerbacks, people paid attention. He listed them in order: Patrick Surtain II, Derek Stingley Jr., Christian Gonzalez and Quinyon Mitchell. The ranking came out during a segment on NFL on ESPN, and it immediately sparked debate.

Surtain sits alone at the top

Nobody argues with Surtain as the No. 1 guy. The Denver Broncos star won Defensive Player of the Year in 2024 and backed it up with another Pro Bowl season in 2025. That year he put up 47 tackles, 12 pass breakups and an interception. He’s now made four straight Pro Bowls and shows no signs of slowing down. At 25 years old, he’s already the standard everyone else is measured against.

Stingley at No. 2 might raise some eyebrows if you haven’t watched him lately. The Houston Texans corner has been named an All-Pro and Pro Bowler in back-to-back seasons. In 2025 alone he logged 36 tackles, 15 pass breakups and four interceptions. That marks three straight seasons with at least four picks. He’s quietly becoming one of the most complete cover guys in the league.

Gonzalez landed at No. 3, which feels right for a guy who just made his first Pro Bowl in 2025. The New England Patriots corner finished that season with 69 tackles and 10 pass breakups. He’s become the anchor of that defense and is in line for a big contract extension. New England’s rebuild has plenty of question marks, but cornerback isn’t one of them.

Mitchell gets the nod with a potential Eagles bias

Slay played for the Philadelphia Eagles. He knows what Quinyon Mitchell brings. Mitchell made the Pro Bowl and earned All-Pro honors in 2025 after putting up 45 tackles and 17 pass defenses. That’s pretty serious production for a guy who’s only been in the league two years. Some might argue Sauce Gardner or Jalen Ramsey deserve the spot, but Slay’s pick here is defensible.

What’s interesting is how young this list is. Surtain is 25. Stingley is 24. Gonzalez is 23. Mitchell is 24. The old guard like Ramsey and Jaire Alexander are still good, but the torch is clearly being passed. Slay himself is 34 and still playing at a high level, but he’s watching these guys take over.

The 2026 season is going to be a dogfight for the title of best cornerback in football. All four of these guys have the talent to claim it. Slay will be watching closely — probably with a little extra edge knowing his list might end up on a few bulletin boards along the way.
