Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney Ranked No. 2 QB-WR Duo in College Football

Miami football is reloaded and ready for 2027. After making a run to the national championship game last season, the Hurricanes didn’t sit still. They went out and grabbed two key pieces from Duke’s ACC-winning roster.

Quarterback Darian Mensah is the new man under center, replacing Carson Beck. And he brought his favorite target with him. Cooper Barkate, Duke’s leading receiver last year, followed Mensah to Coral Gables. But here’s the thing: Miami already had a star receiver in Malachi Toney, who led the FBS in catches as a freshman. So now the Hurricanes have two legitimate QB-WR combos that rank among the nation’s best.

ON3’s Daniel Hager broke down the top 10 quarterback-wide receiver duos in the country. Ohio State’s Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith sit at No. 1, which is about as obvious as it gets. But right behind them? Mensah and Toney at No. 2. And Mensah paired with Barkate comes in at No. 8.

Why Mensah and Toney are a problem

Toney’s freshman season was ridiculous. He hauled in 109 receptions, tops in the FBS, and was a huge reason Miami made it all the way to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Now he gets a quarterback who threw for nearly 4,000 yards last season and led Duke to its first ACC title since 1989. That’s a recipe for something dangerous.

“Bringing in a superstar quarterback to throw to Toney this season would be key for Miami, and it hit big with Duke transfer Darian Mensah,” Hager wrote. Mensah finished second in the FBS in passing yards with 3,973. So yeah, the chemistry should be there.

The Barkate factor

It’s not often a team lands two QB-WR duos in a top 10 list. But Mensah and Barkate earned that No. 8 spot. Barkate caught 72 passes for 1,106 yards and seven touchdowns at Duke last season. He was the Blue Devils’ go-to guy. Now he’s the No. 2 option behind Toney. That’s a lot of firepower.

And don’t forget about Vandrevius Jacobs, the speedy receiver Miami plucked from South Carolina. So Mensah has three reliable targets, not just two. Mario Cristobal’s offense looks stacked.

“Mensah now has two star receivers to throw to on offense, along with speedy South Carolina transfer receiver Vandrevius Jacobs. It’s safe to say Miami’s offense should be one of the best in all of college football next season,” Hager added.

Miami kicks off the 2027 season with high expectations. The offense is loaded. The quarterback and his receivers already have a working relationship. And the memory of last year’s title game run is still fresh. The Hurricanes might just be the team to beat.
