Daniels Isn’t Losing Sleep Over Commanders’ Quiet Free Agency — Here’s Why

Jayden Daniels has heard the noise. The Washington Commanders quarterback knows fans are watching the free agent market, wondering when a big-name receiver like Brandon Aiyuk or Stefon Diggs will land in the nation’s capital. But according to Daniels, the panic might be premature.

“I’m excited with the guys we have in the room,” Daniels told ESPN’s John Keim. That line isn’t just offseason optimism — it’s a signal that Washington’s QB1 isn’t sweating the lack of splashy additions.

On paper, the Commanders’ receiver corps looks thin after Terry McLaurin. The veteran wideout remains the unquestioned top target, and last season’s down year for the entire offense didn’t erase his track record of five straight 1,000-yard campaigns. Daniels will lean on McLaurin early and often in 2026.

But beyond McLaurin, Washington’s depth chart raises eyebrows. Deebo Samuel led the team with 727 yards and five touchdowns in 2025 — and he’s currently a free agent. No other Commanders receiver cracked 300 yards. That leaves a lot of uncertainty for a young quarterback hoping to take the next step.

The franchise didn’t ignore the issue entirely. Washington used a third-round pick on Clemson’s Antonio Williams, who should step into a meaningful role immediately. Players like Treylon Burks and Dynami Brown will also get chances to prove themselves during camp.

Adding a proven weapon like Diggs or Aiyuk would obviously change the math. Defenses couldn’t key in on McLaurin as heavily, and Daniels would have more room to stretch the field. But those deals aren’t always easy to pull off — the trade compensation and contract structure have to line up. According to reports, Washington hasn’t found a workable deal yet.

If that doesn’t change before the season, Daniels insists he’s ready to roll with what he’s got. It’s a confident stance from a quarterback who knows the spotlight is fixed on him — and who seems comfortable carrying the load without a flashy co-star.

Whether that confidence holds up when the heat turns on in September is another story.
