So much for the guessing game. The Clippers have made up their minds ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft, and it looks like Keaton Wagler is the guy. According to a report from ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel, LA is expected to take Wagler with the No. 5 overall pick, passing on fellow guard Mikel Brown Jr.
That decision ends weeks of debate inside and outside the organization. Both prospects were linked to the Clippers in mock drafts and front-office chatter, but the league-wide feeling is that Wagler will get the call right after the top four are off the board. Those four, by most accounts, are AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer and Caleb Wilson in some order. The Clippers’ pick is where things get interesting.
There was some smoke about the team possibly trading down or moving the pick entirely. But Siegel reports that scenario is off the table now. The Clippers have their target and they’re keeping the pick.
From a fit standpoint, it makes some sense. The Clippers already have Darius Garland in the backcourt, and Wagler’s ability to slide between both guard spots gives them more flexibility than Brown would. Wagler is big enough to play some shooting guard and comfortable enough on the ball to run the offense when Garland sits. That kind of versatility matters for a team that’s trying to build around a smaller, quicker core.
Wagler’s freshman year at Illinois was legit. He started all 37 games, averaged over 33 minutes a night and put up 17.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists. His shooting splits were solid too — 44.5 percent from the field, 39.7 from three and 79.6 from the line. That three-point percentage jumps out because the Clippers need spacing, and Wagler can hit from deep off the catch or off the dribble.
Not everyone is convinced this is the right move. Siegel himself noted that he thinks Brown is the better long-term fit for LA. But the front office sees it differently, and they’re the ones making the call.
The draft is tonight. Wagler should be hearing his name called fifth overall, and the Clippers will have their guy.
