Claude Giroux is heading to the open market. The veteran forward will test unrestricted free agency when the window opens Wednesday, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. But that doesn’t mean his time in Ottawa is definitely over.
Giroux has been the hometown kid made good for the last four seasons with the Senators. He grew up just outside Ottawa, played junior hockey nearby and eventually signed with the team as a free agent in 2022. Staying was always part of the story. But the script might be changing.
LeBrun reported Tuesday night that Giroux is keeping the door open to a return to Ottawa while also checking what else is out there. Some teams were waiting to see if he’d actually hit the market. Now they’ve got their answer.
The timing is interesting. Ottawa just traded Brady Tkachuk to Florida in a move that signaled the franchise is in flux. They still have young talent, sure. But losing your captain and watching your identity shift mid-offseason leaves a lot of questions. Where does this team go from here? And does a 38-year-old forward want to be part of whatever comes next?
Giroux played all 82 games last season, scoring 14 goals and 49 points. Those aren’t prime numbers from his Flyers days, but he’s still a useful player. Smart. Reliable. The kind of depth piece a contender might want for a playoff run. And there are contending teams that could use a veteran who doesn’t hurt you at either end of the ice.
But there’s the other side of it. Giroux is from the area. His family is there. Ending your career with the team you grew up watching — that’s not nothing. There’s a real emotional pull to that, and it’s hard to measure in dollars or term.
Ottawa made the playoffs in 2026 for the second straight year, which is progress. But they got swept by Carolina in the first round, and the Hurricanes went on to win the Cup. That gap between being a playoff team and being a real threat is wide, and the Senators are staring right at it.
Giroux will get calls. He’ll have options. Whether he takes one of them or circles back to Ottawa is the question that’ll hang over the first few days of free agency. For a guy who’s played over 1,100 games, scored 1,100 points and never lifted the Cup, the choice might come down to what matters most at this stage.
Home. Or a shot at the thing he’s never won.
