Chelsea has officially opened talks to sign Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace. The 26-year-old French international is currently representing France at the World Cup, and he’s the guy the Blues have zeroed in on to shore up their back line this summer.
The club has started negotiating with Lacroix’s camp on personal terms, according to Fabrizio Romano. Direct talks with Palace are expected to follow once the player side gets sorted. That’s the order of operations here — get the player on board first, then haggle with the club.
Lacroix joined Palace from Wolfsburg a couple years ago and has been steady if not spectacular. But Chelsea sees something more. They’ve made him the priority over other names like Jacobo Ramón from Como, a 21-year-old Spanish defender who’s also been linked. Ramón is younger and cheaper, sure, but Chelsea wants experience and a guy who can step in right now.
Why Lacroix fits what Chelsea needs
The Blues have been cycling through center-backs like they’re collecting trading cards. Wesley Fofana can’t stay healthy. Benoît Badiashile has moments but hasn’t locked down a spot. Levi Colwill is talented but still raw in some areas. Lacroix gives them a 26-year-old in his prime who’s played in the Premier League and knows what the league demands.
He’s also a France international. That matters for branding, for chemistry, for the kind of player who walks into the building with a certain level of belief in himself. Chelsea has French connections already — Malo Gusto, Christopher Nkunku, Badiashile — so Lacroix wouldn’t be walking into a completely new environment.
The catch
Palace isn’t going to let him go cheap. Lacroix still has two years left on his contract, and Crystal Palace doesn’t have to sell. They’re not a club that gets pushed around in negotiations. If Chelsea wants him bad enough — and it sounds like they do — they’ll have to pay a real fee. Probably north of £40 million.
There’s also the World Cup factor. Lacroix is in the middle of a tournament with France. He might not want to hash out a transfer while he’s trying to win a trophy for his country. Agents handle that stuff, sure, but the player has to sign off. And distractions are distractions.
Chelsea has been busy this window. They’ve been linked with a handful of defenders. But Lacroix sitting at the top of their list tells you something. They want someone who can start immediately, not a project. Ramón might be one for the future. Lacroix is for right now.
Romano’s report didn’t include any timeline for when a deal might get done. But talks are open. That’s the first real step. And for a club that’s spent the last couple years overcorrecting its squad building, this feels like a more deliberate move.
