Draymond Green and Charles Barkley have been going at each other on TV for years. But after their latest blowup went viral during the playoffs, something unexpected happened. They went to a dive bar together.
Barkley, who’s never exactly been shy about saying what he thinks, sat down with Pardon My Take this week and explained exactly what went down after the cameras cut off. The Hall of Famer told the hosts that the whole thing barely registered on his radar, even though fans online were picking sides hard.
Here’s what’s funny about it though. A lot of people jumped in to defend Barkley against Green. And Barkley noticed. He seemed genuinely caught off guard by that.
“What was interesting about it, I didn’t even pay it that much attention. So we go to a little dive bar after work all the time, and Dray went with me that night,” Barkley said. He added that he’s not thin-skinned about the back-and-forth: “I hope they’re not sensitive because if I say it, I believe it. That doesn’t mean I’m always right.”
The Actual Fight
If you missed it, Green was sitting in as a guest analyst on Inside the NBA when he took a shot at Barkley’s time with the Houston Rockets. Barkley had been saying the Warriors dynasty was done, and Green took that personally. Or at least he acted like he did.
The exchange got loud and it got awkward. Fans online jumped all over it, mostly siding with Barkley. The common take was that Green, for all his four rings, simply is not on Barkley’s level as a player. Barkley would agree with that assessment, by the way.
“Listen, Draymond is a good player. I was a great player… We’re not on the same level,” Barkley said flatly.
He’s not wrong either. Barkley was an MVP. A Hall of Famer. One of the most dominant forwards the league has ever seen. Green is a future Hall of Famer too, probably, but with a very different resume. He’s a defensive specialist who became a system player in a perfect system. Barkley was the system.
Barkley never won a ring though. Green has four. That’s the counterpunch Green always throws, but it doesn’t seem to land with Barkley.
They’ve had these moments before. Barkley has criticized Green’s antics on the court for years. The shoves, the kicks, the technical fouls, the suspensions. But somehow, they always seem to work it out afterward. A private conversation. A shared drink. A handshake.
It’s weird. It’s also kind of refreshing. Two guys who genuinely seem to dislike each other on camera, then go grab a beer like nothing happened. That’s rare in sports media. Most of these feuds get manufactured and milked for weeks. Barkley and Green just move on.
