Celtics Traded Jaylen Brown to a Rival and Fans Are Asking One Thing

The Boston Celtics just did something nobody expected. They traded Jaylen Brown. To the Philadelphia 76ers. And the internet has exactly one question: why?

Brown was coming off a career year. He dragged Boston to the second seed in the East, put up personal bests across the board, made All-NBA Second Team, and finished sixth in MVP voting. He was the embodiment of that whole Boston tough-guy identity. The guy who wouldn’t quit.

So the Celtics rewarded him by shipping him to a division rival.

On Wednesday, news broke that Boston sent Brown to Philadelphia for Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks. The basketball world just kind of stopped for a second. Like, wait, what? This was the guy who led the team through what everyone assumed was a rebuilding year. Now he’s gone. To the Sixers.

Fans didn’t hold back.

“Is it April Fools? What are we doing @celtics?” one person wrote on X.

“We just traded him to one of our rivals. The hell?” added another.

“Dumbest trade of our generation. You traded a guy who led his team to the playoffs for someone who stays injured and is elderly, LMFAO. Wow. I don’t know if I can watch the @celtics this year, LOL,” a third user said.

“What was Boston thinking?” someone else asked.

“This is the most random blockbuster I’ve seen in years, LMAO. What is going on?” another comment read.

The cracks were there, apparently

It’s not like this came completely out of nowhere. The relationship between Brown and the Celtics front office had been fraying for a while. According to reports, Boston was willing to include Brown in a package to get Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Bucks. That kind of thing sticks with a player. Especially a guy who just gave you everything he had.

The trade package they eventually took — Paul George, two first-rounders, two second-rounders — is decent value on paper. But George is 34 and has a history of missing games. Brown is 27 and just entering his prime. That’s a bet on the short-term over the long-term, and it’s a risky one.

Philly is suddenly scary

For the 76ers, though, this is a different story. They gave up future picks, sure, but they just plugged a 27-year-old All-NBA wing into a lineup that already has Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and rookie VJ Edgecombe. That’s a four-man core that can hang with anyone in the league. Right now, today.

So the Celtics made a move that either looks like genius if it works or a disaster if it doesn’t. And right now, a lot of people are leaning toward disaster.
