Training camp is supposed to be about optimism, fresh starts, and getting your legs under you. For the Carolina Panthers, it’s starting to look like a triage unit.
We’re not even through the first week, and the Panthers have already lost defensive end Nic Scourton to a torn ACL. That happened last week, right as the team kicked off early prep for the Hall of Fame Game. Scourton was one of those guys the front office was quietly high on, a potential difference-maker off the edge. Now he’s done for the year before the preseason even starts.
And now there’s another one.
Rookie wide receiver Chris Brazzell II went down during Wednesday’s practice with a left leg injury. The former Tennessee standout had to be carted off the field, which is never a good sign. Quarterback Bryce Young jogged over to check on him before Brazzell was taken away, which tells you something about how the locker room feels about this kid.
Brazzell sat out Tuesday with what head coach Dave Canales described as knee soreness. Here’s the worrying part: if this is the same knee that was bothering him a day earlier, that’s a lot more concerning than a random tweak. The Panthers haven’t released an official diagnosis yet, but seeing a guy go from knee soreness to being carted off in 24 hours is a massive red flag.
Injury history piling up before the pads even come on
This isn’t just bad luck. It’s the kind of start that makes you wonder if the training staff is missing something or if the intensity level is too high too soon. Either way, the Panthers are now staring at a receiving corps that was already thin on proven depth. If Brazzell misses significant time, that’s a real problem for a team trying to build around Young and figure out what they have in the passing game.
Brazzell was brought in as a developmental piece with size and speed, a guy who could stretch the field and give Young a big target. The team needs him on the field, not in the training room.
Scourton’s injury was a gut punch on its own. Losing a high-motor defensive lineman with his kind of upside before he even gets a real camp rep is brutal. The defense was supposed to be the strength of this team. Now they’re already down a guy who was projected to carve out a significant rotational role.
The Panthers have not announced any roster moves related to either injury yet, but they’re going to have to start looking at street free agents or practice squad pickups if Brazzell’s injury turns out to be long-term. You don’t just replace a guy like Scourton, but they need bodies at wideout.
It’s not time to panic in Carolina, but it’s getting close. Camp started with a Hall of Fame Game buzz, and it’s already turned into a survival game.
