Capitals GM Chris Patrick Leaves Door Open for Alex Ovechkin Return After Aggressive Offseason

The Washington Capitals front office has been anything but quiet this summer. And all of it, GM Chris Patrick more or less admitted, is tied to one guy.

That guy is Alex Ovechkin, the all-time NHL goals leader who still hasn’t decided if he’s coming back for another season.

Patrick made that pretty clear Wednesday night in a conversation with ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski. Ovechkin hasn’t made a call yet, and part of that is about seeing what the team looks like. “He hasn’t made a decision yet. I think part of it was seeing where we are after today and that we’re trying to do as much as we can to improve the team,” Patrick told ESPN.

So Patrick went out and did exactly that. He traded for Jordan Kyrou early in the free agency window. Then he grabbed Alex Tuch, adding another skilled winger to the mix. He also acquired Boone Jenner. These aren’t small moves. They’re the kind of transactions a team makes when it wants to win now, not wait around.

What the moves tell us

The Capitals missed the playoffs last season. That stung. But instead of tearing things down, Patrick is pushing chips in. The message seems clear: they want to be competitive in a crowded Eastern Conference, whether Ovechkin comes back or not.

The funny thing is, the cap math actually works out for a one-year Ovechkin deal. Patrick left enough room. That’s not an accident.

Ovechkin passed Wayne Gretzky for the all-time goals record in the 2024-25 season. The moment came on a one-timer that blew past Ilya Sorokin. Since then, he’s kept adding to the total while trying to keep the Caps afloat. He’s 39 years old and the question everyone wants answered is simple: one more year or not?

He hasn’t set a timeline for his decision. But there have been hints it could come soon. The roster Patrick has assembled certainly looks like it was built with Ovechkin in mind. Fast wingers, a couple of gritty guys, some veteran presence. It’s a group that could compete right away.

Or it could be a group that keeps grinding regardless. The Capitals have made it clear they’re not planning on a rebuild. Not while Ovechkin is still considering options. And not while Patrick is making moves like this.

For now, Washington waits. Ovechkin thinks it over. And the rest of the East watches closely.
