Caleb Wilson might be the guy who changes that.
The 20-year-old rookie out of North Carolina just wrapped a Summer League run in Las Vegas that felt less like a warmup and more like a declaration. Four games. 23.5 points per game. 7.3 rebounds. 2.5 blocks. 1.3 steals. Numbers that got him named to the 2026 NBA Summer League First Team alongside Meleek Thomas, Cameron Boozer, Brayden Burries, and Yaxel Lendeborg.
But the stat sheet only tells part of it.
Wilson dropped 35 points on the Memphis Grizzlies’ Summer League squad. He threw down dunks that made people in the stands stand up. He ran huddles. He directed traffic on defense. For a 20-year-old playing with a bunch of guys trying to earn roster spots, he looked like the one who already knew he belonged.
The Bulls drafted him fourth overall in June. That pick came with pressure. This is a franchise that hasn’t won a playoff series since 2015. They’ve been stuck in the middle, too good to tank, not good enough to matter. Wilson represents something different. A true rebuild. Not a retool. Not a soft reset.
Built for Chicago
Wilson brings a skill set the Bulls haven’t had in years. Length. Athleticism. A frame that can handle NBA physicality right now, not two years from now. He moves like a wing but has the size to play forward. The kind of player who can guard multiple positions and score in different ways.
He also lands in a good situation. Tiago Splitter is the kind of coach who connects with young players. Bryson Graham runs the front office with a player-first mentality. Josh Giddey and Matas Buzelis give Wilson a core to grow with. Fellow rookie Dailyn Swain and hopeful Jaylin Sellers round out a young group that can develop together.
But nobody is kidding themselves. All eyes will be on Wilson.
Chicago basketball tradition
Chicago has a way of making its basketball stars bigger than life. Jordan became Jordan there. Pippen became a household name. Rose became the youngest MVP in league history. Even Coby White, a North Carolina guy, found his game in Chicago.
Wilson already gets it. Before the draft, he talked about what it means to come from North Carolina and play in a city that treats basketball like religion. He mentioned Jordan and Scott Williams and Coby White by name. He knows the history. He seems ready to carry it.
His style of play fits Chicago too. He could hold his own at Garfield Park where Arthur Agee and William Gates learned the game. He could play chess on the court at Jackson Park where Billy Harris built a legend. He could run the floor at Hayes Park and Nat King Cole Park where Rose and Dwyane Wade used to go to work.
That matters here. Chicago fans can smell a fake from a mile away. Wilson doesn’t feel like one.
