Bucks Hold Two Lottery Picks. Could They Trade Up for Mikel Brown Jr.?

The Milwaukee Bucks blew it all up and sent Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miami. Now they’ve got picks 10 and 13 in Tuesday’s NBA Draft, and word is they’ve got their eye on a particular guard.

According to ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel, the Bucks have serious interest in Louisville standout Mikel Brown Jr. The problem? Brown is projected to go sixth overall to the Brooklyn Nets, who have been fielding calls about moving that pick.

Siegel reported that Milwaukee is one of the teams with “heavy interest” in Brown, and the natural question is whether they’d package both lottery picks to jump up and grab him. He called it “doubtful” but added that “anything is possible on draft night.”

That kind of move would fit the general direction the franchise is heading. General manager Jon Horst and company could have chased a win-now piece like Jaylen Brown from Boston. Instead they took Miami’s haul for Giannis — young players, draft picks, a full reset button. Trading two first-rounders to land one premium prospect would be consistent with that philosophy.

If Milwaukee stays put at 10 and 13, Siegel projects them to take Tennessee wing Nate Ament and Baylor guard Cameron Carr. That’s two shots at rotation players. But packaging them to move up for Brown would give the Bucks a potential franchise point guard to build around — assuming the backcourt doesn’t get too crowded.

They’ve already got Ryan Rollins, Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and more all needing minutes. Throwing Brown into that mix means somebody eventually gets squeezed. But that’s a problem for later. Draft night is about landing talent first and sorting out the fit afterward.

The Nets hold the cards at six. They could just take Brown themselves and be done with it. Or they could listen to offers. Milwaukee’s not the only team interested, but they might be the most motivated.

The NBA Draft tips off Tuesday at 8:00 pm ET in Brooklyn.
