Galatasaray has won four straight Turkish league titles and just bagged a record 26th championship. So naturally, they’re shopping for a statement midfielder. And they’ve set their sights high: Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.
Turkish outlet Fanatik reports the Istanbul club is putting together a package worth €30 million to €35 million for the 31-year-old. They’d also offer him around €10 million net per season. Okan Buruk wants a big-name addition for Champions League duty, and the club plans to make a formal move after the World Cup ends.
There’s one problem. Fernandes doesn’t seem interested.
A captain who doesn’t want to leave
This isn’t the first time Fernandes has turned down a big payday. He rejected offers from Saudi Pro League clubs during the winter window and again this summer. He wants to lead United into their next Champions League campaign under the current setup. That matters because he’s the captain.
United holds a strong hand here. Fernandes is under contract through 2028. The club hasn’t shown any willingness to sell, and there’s no real pressure to do so. If Galatasaray wants him, they’ll need to convince a player who has already said no to bigger money elsewhere.
Maybe they can find a different way in. But right now, this feels like a long shot.
What Galatasaray is working with
The reported €30-35 million fee is real money for a Turkish club. But it’s not life-changing for Manchester United. Fernandes has been one of their most consistent performers since arriving from Sporting in 2020. He’s got 64 goals and 54 assists in all comps for United. Losing him for that fee would leave a hole in midfield that’s not easy to fill.
Galatasaray has pulled off big moves before. They signed Mauro Icardi, Lucas Torreira and others in recent windows. So it’s not crazy to think they could land a player of Fernandes’s caliber. But those guys were available. Fernandes isn’t.
Still, it’s worth watching. If United has a rough start next season and the club changes its stance, things could shift. But for now, Fernandes is staying put. And Galatasaray might need to look elsewhere for that marquee signing.
