The Boston Bruins didn’t come to the 2026 NHL Draft just to pick a prospect. They came to make a move. According to multiple reports, the team is finalizing a trade to bring forward JJ Peterka in from the Utah Mammoth.
The news broke first from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on Saturday and was later confirmed by Chris Johnston. Johnston wrote on X that the deal is close to done. The Bruins have not officially announced anything, but the word around the league is that it’s all but signed.
For Boston, this is a direct response to getting bounced in the first round of the playoffs by their division rival, the Buffalo Sabres. The Bruins needed scoring. They struggled to finish chances all spring, and general manager Don Sweeney didn’t wait around to address it. He went out and got a 25-year-old winger who has already put up two 25-goal seasons.
From Sabres Prospect to Mammoth Centerpiece
Peterka was originally drafted by the Sabres in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft. He was a kid playing for EC Red Bull Salzburg back in Germany when his name was called 34th overall. He spent time with EHC Red Bull München before making the jump to North America with the Rochester Americans, Buffalo’s AHL affiliate. In his first full season there, he put up 28 goals and 40 assists. That got people’s attention.
He debuted in the NHL that same season, albeit in just two games. His first full year in the league came in 2022-23, and he managed 12 goals and 20 assists across 77 games. Not bad for a rookie. But the real breakout hit the next season, when he scored 28 goals and looked like a legitimate top-six forward.
Then the Sabres moved him. Last offseason, Buffalo sent Peterka to the newly relocated Utah franchise in exchange for Michael Kesselring and Josh Doan. Utah immediately locked him up with a five-year, $38.5 million contract extension. He rewarded them with 25 goals and 22 assists this past season.
What Peterka Brings to Boston
The Bruins are getting a guy who can skate, who’s got a quick release, and who isn’t afraid to go to the dirty areas. He’s not a physical monster, but he plays with enough edge to hang around the net. At 5-foot-11, he’s not huge, but he’s strong on his edges and hard to knock off the puck in tight spaces.
He’s also 25 years old. That fits Boston’s timeline if they’re trying to retool on the fly rather than blow it up. He’s signed through his prime years. The cap hit is manageable for a guy who can give you 25 to 30 goals a year.
One thing worth watching: Peterka has played most of his career as a winger, and the Bruins already have David Pastrnak locked in on the right side. That could mean Peterka shifts to the left, or it could mean Boston moves someone else. Either way, it gives coach Jim Montgomery options.
The cost to get him is still unclear. No details on what Boston sent Utah have surfaced yet, but the Mammoth are clearly in a retooling phase themselves. They’ve got picks and prospects coming in from multiple directions. This deal could be one piece of a larger plan.
For now, Peterka is a Bruin. Or will be, once the paperwork is done. And in a division that just got even tougher, Boston just got a little bit more dangerous.
