Broderick Jones Cleared for Camp After Neck Surgery. The Steelers O-Line Just Got Interesting.

The Pittsburgh Steelers got some genuinely good news on the injury front as training camp opens. Broderick Jones, the team’s first-round pick from 2023, has been medically cleared to practice after undergoing spinal fusion surgery last November. General manager Omar Khan confirmed the development, saying the team expects Jones to be on the field early in camp.

This is a big deal for a couple reasons. First, Jones avoided starting camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, which would have been a real setback for a guy whose second season got cut short by a scary neck injury. Second, it shuts down — at least for now — any lingering trade chatter. Earlier this offseason, former Steelers lineman Trai Essex suggested on his podcast that Jones should ask for a trade. Essex called it a prudent move after Pittsburgh declined Jones’s fifth-year option. The logic was that Jones might get squeezed out by the team’s other young tackles. But none of that matters if he’s healthy and practicing.

The Steelers have been careful not to rush things. Khan made it clear the team will be smart about how they manage Jones’s workload in individual and team drills. That makes sense. You don’t rush a guy back from neck fusion surgery. But just having him on the field changes the calculus for the offensive line. It gives the coaching staff real flexibility. It also gives Jones a chance to compete for snaps instead of sitting in the training room wondering when his next setback might come.

Jones looked solid as a rookie before the injury, starting 11 games at right tackle. The Steelers drafted him thinking he could be a cornerstone piece. If the medical clearance holds up and he can stay on the field, that vision is still very much alive. There’s no guarantee he walks into a starting job right away — the team has Dan Moore Jr. and others competing — but he’s now in the mix instead of rehabbing.

The real story here is that a player who some thought might be on his way out of Pittsburgh just got a fresh start. Neck surgery is no joke, and spinal fusion is the kind of procedure that can end careers. So the fact that Jones is cleared to practice is more than just a roster update. It’s a legit medical comeback. And for a Steelers team that needs depth and young talent on the line, it’s the kind of break you can build on.
