Illinois coach Bret Bielema has been around college football for a long time. He played at Iowa. He coached at Wisconsin, Arkansas and in the NFL. So when he calls something the most impressive story he’s ever witnessed in his career, it actually means something.
And that’s exactly what he said about Indiana’s turnaround under Curt Cignetti.
Speaking at Big Ten Media Days, Bielema didn’t hold back. According to Michael Niziolek of The Herald-Times, Bielema said, That is single handedly the most impressive story that I’ve witnessed in my college career.
From afterthought to national champion
Indiana made a bowl game just five times from 1994 through 2023. They didn’t win any of those bowls. Their best season in that 30-year stretch was 8-5 in 2019. Then Cignetti showed up.
Two years later, the Hoosiers went undefeated, won a national championship and absolutely wrecked people in the playoffs. Including Bielema’s own team.
Illinois came into that 2025 matchup ranked ninth in the country. Indiana led 35-10 at halftime. Then they just kept going. Final score: 63-10. Illinois didn’t score a single point after halftime.
What Cig did, came in and took over a program that historically had been one of the losingest programs and to turn it into two years later and undefeated, and literally ran away with it, right?
Bielema said. Like I know what they did to us, right? And then, you know, to see them do what they did in the playoffs, that’s not happened in the CFP playoffs. The way they’ve dominated teams is just really impressive.
Can Indiana do it again?
The Hoosiers had a strong offseason and look like they could be in position for another playoff run in 2026. They open the season on September 5 against North Texas.
Bielema, for his part, doesn’t sound like someone who’s eager to see Indiana on the schedule again anytime soon. But he also sounds like a guy who recognizes what he just watched — and knows it’s rare.
