The Milwaukee Brewers were cruising into the holiday weekend. First place in the NL Central. A 54-33 record. Everything felt right. Then Brandon Woodruff walked off the mound on the 4th of July and suddenly the whole vibe shifted.
Woodruff has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. Lefty Drew Rom is coming up from Triple-A Nashville to take his spot. It’s the same shoulder that’s given him trouble before, and nobody in Milwaukee is treating this like a minor blip.
Woodruff talked about the mental side of it after the move became official.
“I know what’s before me. I know what I’m dealing with, so if I can avoid some things, it just becomes, ‘Get back on the field and pitch and help them win,'” he said.
That quote sounds steady. But it’s hard to ignore the history here. Woodruff has battled shoulder issues in the past. Every time this comes up, there’s a quiet worry that lingers. The Brewers have been careful with him. They’ve managed his workload. But inflammation is the kind of thing that can turn into something longer if it doesn’t calm down.
The timing stinks, too. Milwaukee’s staff has been one of the better stories in the league this year. Jacob Misiorowski just got named an All-Star and there’s real buzz around him as a Cy Young candidate. Losing Woodruff for even two weeks forces the bullpen to carry more weight and tests that depth the front office built.
Without Woodruff in the rotation for the next couple of weeks, the Brewers will need to lean heavily on their relievers and hope the offense can outscore some mistakes. They’ve got a good team. They proved last year they can make a playoff run — they got all the way to the NLCS before the Dodgers swept them in four games. But peaking at the right time is everything in October, and losing a starter in early July can mess with the math if it lingers.
The team hasn’t said anything about a timeline beyond the 15 days. That’s standard. But shoulder stuff in pitchers is never just standard. For now, Woodruff will rest, rehab and try to get back. The Brewers will keep winning games and hoping this is just a speed bump.
And if it’s not? They’ve got a few weeks before the trade deadline to figure out Plan B.
