Brandon Miller’s Agent and Hornets GM Are Talking Extension. Here’s What We Know.

The Charlotte Hornets have a decision to make on Brandon Miller. And it sounds like they’ve already made up their minds.

Miller, the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft out of Alabama, just became eligible for a contract extension as he gets set to enter his fourth season. The clock is ticking, but the Hornets front office isn’t exactly playing hardball.

General manager Jeff Peterson didn’t mince words when asked about the situation recently. He told reporters, including one from Sports Illustrated, that conversations with Miller and his representation have already happened. And the message was clear: they want him around.

“They know that we want Brandon here for a very, very long time,” Peterson said. “So I won’t get into the particulars of what we’ve discussed, but bottom line is we want Brandon Miller here for a very long time.”

That’s about as direct as a GM gets in public during contract negotiations. Peterson basically said we’re keeping this guy without actually signing the dotted line yet.

Miller’s value to the Hornets has only grown. This offseason alone, Charlotte has seen both LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges head elsewhere. That leaves Miller as the clear centerpiece of a roster that’s still figuring out its identity. He averaged 20.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists last season. Those numbers alone make him a no-brainer for a long-term deal.

What Peterson Really Thinks of Miller

Peterson didn’t stop at the extension talk. He went deep on what Miller means to the franchise.

“I think everyone would agree he’s an enormous talent,” Peterson said. “He showed a tremendous amount of growth last season. You know, battling through an injury, but was able to continue to persevere, and again, help us achieve some results that made our fan base and us very, very proud.”

Miller played through some nagging injuries last year. That kind of toughness is something front offices notice. Peterson mentioned Miller’s willingness to fight through pain and his desire to win as reasons they’re all-in on him.

“Everyone knows he’s skilled and athletic, and he has a true desire to win and continue to get better,” Peterson added. “So, could not be more excited to be going into next season with Brandon Miller on our squad.”

The extension itself hasn’t been signed yet. But Peterson’s tone suggests it’s more of a when than an if. Teams don’t publicly declare a guy their long-term future unless they mean it. And Peterson said it twice in the same conversation.
