Brady Tkachuk Trade to Florida Comes with a Surprise Lineup Plan from Paul Maurice

The Florida Panthers just pulled off a move that changes the balance of the Atlantic Division. They traded for Brady Tkachuk, sending the Ottawa Senators a massive haul that includes two first-round picks in 2026 (No. 9 and No. 25), a conditional first-rounder in 2029, and a second-round pick.

But here’s the thing. Head coach Paul Maurice doesn’t plan to reunite the Tkachuk brothers right away.

According to Panthers insider George Richards, Maurice is thinking about starting Brady on a line with captain Sasha Barkov and Sam Reinhart instead of putting him alongside his brother Matthew. Reinhart told Richards there is a lot of excitement in the room about the addition.

Why Brady Asked Out of Ottawa

Brady made it clear his trade request was about one thing: winning. He told Matthew on their Wingmen podcast that Florida has always been the toughest opponent in recent years because of how they play and their winning culture. He said guys came from different places and found success there.

He also made a point to separate the hockey decision from family. “I made this decision taking you out of it,” he told Matthew. “It wasn’t about you. You know how much I love you.”

That sounds like a guy tired of losing. Ottawa has missed the playoffs in six of the last seven seasons, and Brady has only played eight postseason games in his career. Florida went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2023 and won it all in 2024. The contrast is pretty stark.

What the Lineup Looks Like

Putting Brady with Barkov and Reinhart would give the Panthers a top line built around skill and two-way ability. Barkov is one of the best two-way centers in the league. Reinhart just scored 57 goals two seasons ago. Brady brings net-front presence and a physical edge that fits Florida’s style.

Of course, Maurice might change his mind once camp starts. Having the option to stack that line or let the brothers play together gives him flexibility. Matthew Tkachuk already has chemistry with players like Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Bennett, so the coaching staff could keep that group intact while plugging Brady into a top spot.

Brady has 213 goals and 250 assists in 572 career NHL games. He hasn’t played a shift with his brother in a meaningful game since they were kids. That storyline will follow the Panthers all season, whether they’re on the same line or not.

Florida clearly thinks Brady can help them get back to the top. They gave up a lot to get him, and they did it while staying in the same division. That means Ottawa will have to watch him play for the next contender in-state for years to come.
