Bradley Beal Turns Down Clippers Option. Miami Could Be His Next Stop.

Bradley Beal made a move Monday that caught a lot of people off guard. He declined his $5.6 million player option with the Los Angeles Clippers, making himself an unrestricted free agent. That decision, after a season where he played only six games because of a hip injury, opens up some interesting possibilities.

Beal originally signed a two-year, $11 million deal with the Clippers, hoping to chase a ring alongside Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, John Collins, Ivica Zubac, and Chris Paul. It didn’t work out. He got hurt. The Clippers missed the playoffs entirely. Now he’s back on the market at 33 years old, and the Miami Heat are paying attention.

This isn’t the first time Beal and the Heat have been linked. Before he joined the Clippers, Miami was a frequent topic in trade rumors around him. Now that he’s a free agent and the Heat have Giannis Antetokounmpo on the roster, the connection makes even more sense.

Would Beal Take Less to Play in Miami?

According to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel, Beal is interested in the idea of South Beach. But there’s a catch. Money. Beal just turned down $5.6 million in L.A. Would he take a minimum contract from Miami? That’s the big question.

“Whether or not Beal, coming off his hip injury, would be willing to take a minimum contract from Miami to join Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo in their championship pursuit is the big question that would dictate whether his immediate future is with the Heat,” Siegel wrote.

He also noted the Heat could offer Beal part of their mid-level exception, which would basically match the option he turned down. But Miami has other targets too. Khris Middleton, Anfernee Simons, Tim Hardaway Jr., Mike Conley Jr., and Gabe Vincent are all on their radar. Middleton might have an edge because of his history with Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee.

What’s Left in the Tank for Beal?

Beal isn’t the same player who averaged 30 points a night for the Washington Wizards. Not even close. His numbers have dropped steadily since he left D.C., and last season was basically a wash. He’s still trying to get back to form after a string of underwhelming campaigns.

But in a supporting role on the Heat, he doesn’t need to be the alpha. He just needs to be a reliable scorer off the bench or as a third option. That could work, especially if the Heat lose Norman Powell or Andrew Wiggins in free agency. Both guys are expected to draw interest elsewhere, and Miami might need someone to fill that shooting void.

No one knows yet if Beal is willing to take a discount to join a contender. But the chatter is real. And in a thin free agent market, a motivated Beal on a cheap deal could be a sneaky good pickup.
