Brad Stevens Won’t Say If Jaylen Brown Still Wants to Stay in Boston. That’s the Problem.

The Boston Celtics put Jaylen Brown’s name in trade talks for Giannis Antetokounmpo. That much is out there now. The deal didn’t happen. Milwaukee went with Miami’s offer instead. And now the Celtics have a very awkward situation on their hands with a guy who basically carried them through last season while Jayson Tatum was banged up.

President Brad Stevens got asked directly this week whether he still gets the sense from their conversations that Brown wants to be in Boston. His answer wasn’t exactly reassuring.

“I’ll always keep our conversations private,” Stevens said, via Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell. “I don’t love the fact anytime it’s a big public thing. As you know, we try to keep things as close to the vest and quiet as possible. There’s going to be a lot of noise out there, that’s why you meet and be upfront as possible.”

He added: “I can’t say enough good things about Jaylen… but I certainly am empathetic towards probably what that’s felt like.”

A Non-Answer That Says a Lot

Stevens didn’t say Brown wants to stay. He didn’t say Brown wants to leave either. He just said he keeps their conversations private and that he feels for what Brown has gone through. That’s not nothing. When a front office leader dodges a straightforward question about a star player’s commitment, people notice.

Look, trade rumors are just part of the NBA gig. Nobody thinks the Celtics were trying to run Brown out of town personally. But there’s a difference between a player knowing his name might come up in trade talks and having it confirmed publicly that you offered him up for someone else. That changes the dynamic. Especially when the trade falls through and you’re both still in the same building.

Brown has been nothing but professional through all of this. He showed up, played hard, and was the most consistent guy on the roster during a season that ended with an embarrassing first-round playoff exit. The Celtics have real work to do this offseason if they want to bounce back from that. Repairing any damage with Brown should probably be near the top of the list.

Stevens might just be playing it coy. He’s never been the type to air things out publicly. But at some point, silence becomes its own kind of answer. And right now, nobody in Boston can say for sure whether Jaylen Brown sees his future there.
