Bo Bichette’s Legs Are Banged Up and the Mets Need Him to Reset at the Break

The Mets have not been good in 2026. And frankly, Bo Bichette has not been what they hoped for either. The two-time All-Star signed with New York last winter, but his first season in Queens has been a grind. Now he’s got something else to deal with: his legs.

Bichette is dealing with what the team is calling “overall sore” legs and right ankle soreness, according to Andy Green. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reported Saturday that Bichette is available off the bench but the Mets are planning to use Sunday’s game and the All-Star break as a chance for him to get what Green described as a “full reset.”

That’s a smart move. The guy’s numbers tell the story of a player who’s been fighting himself all year. Through 94 games, Bichette is hitting .256/.299/.377 with 10 homers, 14 doubles and a triple. That’s a far cry from the guy who consistently hit .290 or better in Toronto. The power is down. The on-base is down. Everything is just a little off.

And the ankle stuff explains some of it. When your legs aren’t right, your swing gets wonky. You don’t drive the ball the same way. You don’t trust your base. It’s a snowball effect that can ruin a season if you don’t step back and let it heal.

There have been flashes. Bichette has had moments where he looked like the hitter the Mets thought they were getting. But those moments have been too rare. The team entered Saturday’s game against the Red Sox with a 40-55 record, so it’s not like anyone in that clubhouse is having a banner year.

The Mets are hoping the break changes things. They’re hoping a few days off the feet lets Bichette come back fresh. He’s still only 28 years old. He’s been an All-Star twice. The talent isn’t gone. It’s just buried under a season of nagging stuff and bad results.

New York would love to finish this first half with a win over Boston. But really, the bigger win might just be getting Bichette to the All-Star break in one piece. If he can reset and come out swinging in the second half, maybe this season isn’t a total loss for him. Maybe the Mets can at least build something for 2027.

Either way, the update is what it is: Bichette is sore, he’s resting, and the Mets are holding their breath that a few days off makes a real difference.
