The Denver Nuggets haven’t looked like a real title threat since winning it all in 2023. Nikola Jokic is still doing Nikola Jokic things — three MVPs and counting — but the roster around him hasn’t held up its end. That’s why Jaylen Brown’s name keeps popping up in trade talk.
Bill Simmons threw out a specific proposal recently. The idea: Denver sends Jamal Murray and Cameron Johnson to Boston for Jaylen Brown and Sam Hauser. Simmons broke it down on his podcast, noting the Nuggets would save about $10 million in salary this season with that swap. That extra cap room could be used to grab another piece in free agency.
And this isn’t just Simmons spitballing. Chris Canty reported that Denver has had internal discussions about putting together a package for Brown so he could play alongside Jokic.
“I would just say Denver has discussed this internally. Keep an eye on what the Denver Nuggets could potentially try to do in terms of cobbling together picks, some players, to build the package for Jaylen Brown to pair with Nikola Jokić,” Canty said.
Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists last season. He didn’t slow down when Jayson Tatum came back either. Multiple reports now say Boston no longer views Brown as untouchable, which is a shift from previous years. That alone is going to keep other teams circling.
There are obvious questions about how Brown fits Denver’s system. The Nuggets have a certain flow with Jokic at the center of everything. But offensively it’s hard to argue Brown wouldn’t be an upgrade. He’s a proven scorer who can create his own shot and doesn’t need plays called for him to be effective. That matters in the playoffs when sets break down and you just need someone to go get a bucket.
Murray is still the Nuggets’ second-best player and probably their most valuable trade chip. But he’s dealt with injuries and inconsistency. Moving him would be a gamble, but Denver’s championship window with Jokic in his prime isn’t going to stay open forever. They’ve got to try something.
Boston has its own math to figure out. The luxury tax situation is ugly and the roster might need a shakeup after another early playoff exit. Hauser is a solid shooter but Brown is a borderline superstar. You don’t trade a guy like that unless you’re getting real value back or you’re trying to rebalance your books in a way that lets you build something deeper.
No deal is close. The Nuggets haven’t made an official offer. But the talk is out there and it’s not going away. Brown to Denver is one of those rumors that makes too much sense on paper to completely dismiss.
