Michael Lombardi is out at North Carolina, at least for now. The Tar Heels’ general manager has been placed on paid administrative leave by the university, according to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger. The decision came from the school’s administration, not from head coach Bill Belichick, per On3’s Pete Nakos.
UNC released a standard-issue statement: “As is standard procedure with personnel matters, leadership, staff and student-athletes are prohibited from addressing this topic further, and has no reflection on the merits.” So basically, nobody’s talking. Which, for a program that desperately needs stability after a rough 2025 season, is not exactly ideal.
Lombardi goes way back with Belichick. He worked alongside him as director of player personnel for the Cleveland Browns and later as an assistant to the coaching staff with the New England Patriots. He claims a Super Bowl ring from that Patriots stint, for what that’s worth. Before that, he scouted for the 49ers, Eagles, Raiders and Broncos. More recently, younger fans might recognize him from his polarizing appearances on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
The timing here is everything. North Carolina’s 2025 season started and ended with embarrassing losses, and there was plenty of chatter about Belichick’s relationship with Jordon Hudson. The program needs calm. Lombardi’s sudden leave does the opposite.
Belichick is a guy who hates distractions more than he hates losing. You know that famous clip where he kept saying “We’re on to Cincinnati” after a brutal loss? That’s the mentality. But this isn’t a question he can wave off with a catchphrase. When reporters ask about Lombardi, expect something clipped. Maybe “We’re on to TCU.” Maybe nothing at all.
The real question is whether this messes with the roster. Lombardi was brought in to handle personnel. He was supposed to be the bridge between Belichick’s NFL sensibilities and college recruiting. Now that bridge is on leave and nobody’s saying why.
Here’s the thing about college football: winning covers up everything. If the Tar Heels come out hot in 2026, this becomes a footnote. If they stumble, every camera will be pointed at that empty GM office. The administration made this call, not Belichick. But he’s the one who’ll have to answer for it on the field.
Lombardi started working in NFL front offices in the 1980s. He’s been around long enough to know how these things play out. Whether he’s back in the building by fall or looking for work elsewhere is probably up to what UNC found when it started looking at whatever prompted this leave in the first place.
