Bill Belichick Drives a 20-Year-Old Volvo Wagon and His Center Just Confirmed It

Bill Belichick is now a college coach. And apparently, he still drives like one.

North Carolina center Christo Kelly let it slip during an ESPN interview that the legendary head coach gets around in an old Volvo station wagon. The kind a high school math teacher would drive. Kelly called Belichick a simple man, which tracks if you’ve ever seen the guy in a hoodie on a sideline.

The Tar Heels went 4-8 last season. That’s not great. But Belichick is insisting this year’s team is different.

He told ESPN the culture is better, the talent is better, and the whole operation is further along than it was this time a year ago. Recruiting rankings back him up. Most national outlets have UNC’s class in the top 15. Belichick said if you bring in good players, you’ll have good teams. That’s hard to argue with.

He’s also clearly adjusting to the college game. Belichick mentioned he enjoys watching kids grow up, move away from home, and become actual adults. That’s something you don’t hear much from NFL coaches. They’re busy worrying about cap space and veteran egos.

North Carolina opens the 2026 season on August 29 against TCU. Fans in Chapel Hill are hoping the old Volvo is still running by then and that the offense looks a lot better than it did in 2025.

The Belichick era in college football is still in its early stages. But if nothing else, it’s already given us the image of a six-time Super Bowl champion pulling up to practice in a station wagon with 180,000 miles on it.
