Belgian Media Thinks Youri Tielemans Just Fixed Manchester United’s Biggest Problem

Manchester United pulled off a quiet stunner on Monday. Out of nowhere, they triggered the £35 million release clause in Youri Tielemans’ Aston Villa contract and the Belgian midfielder is already through his medicals. The official unveiling is just a formality now.

This one has been simmering for years. Tielemans almost came to Old Trafford back when he was tearing it up on loan at Leicester from Monaco. Then he signed permanently with Leicester, Villa grabbed him after relegation in 2023, and everyone figured that ship had sailed. Except Tielemans apparently never let the idea go. He made sure his Villa deal carried that £35 million escape hatch. United walked through it after he made clear this was the move he actually wanted.

What Belgian outlets are saying about the move

Nieuwsblad went straight for the jugular. They called Tielemans an instant game-changer for United, framing it as the opposite of a gamble. “United is not buying potential, but a proven mainstay. That is also precisely why Aston Villa actually didn’t want to let him leave at all.” They also pointed to something United fans have been screaming about since Casemiro started showing his age. “In recent seasons, the entire build-up at Manchester United rested too often on the shoulders of Bruno Fernandes. Tielemans is exactly the type of midfielder who can share that burden.”

Sporza took a different angle. They linked the transfer directly to Tielemans’ World Cup performance. “Reward after heroic performance at the World Cup? Youri Tielemans on his way to making long-awaited top transfer to Manchester United.” DH Net doubled down on that: “Beyond the attractive price and opportunity, Youri Tielemans’ excellent World Cup served as the final argument for the Red Devils’ management to go on the offensive in recent hours.”

That tracks. Tielemans was genuinely good for Belgium on the biggest stage. It gave United brass a recent sample to point at and say yeah, this guy still has it.

What this actually means for United’s midfield

Casemiro’s exit left a gaping hole in the middle of the park. Not just defensively but in terms of who can actually progress the ball without panicking. Tielemans isn’t a destroyer. He’s a tempo guy. He picks passes, keeps things moving, and takes pressure off Fernandes so Bruno can freelance higher up the field.

The midfield still feels one piece short. United need an athletic presence next to Tielemans and whoever else is in there. But if Michael Carrick lands that guy too, this could be the most technically sound midfield United have had in years. Tielemans at £35 million in this market is something close to a steal.
