Bears GM Ryan Poles Told Kyler Gordon Straight Up: You’ve Got to Earn That Trust Back

Kyler Gordon is starting training camp on the physically unable to perform list, and the Chicago Bears aren’t sugarcoating what that means for his standing on the team. The cornerback has only played three games since last season, and a string of soft-tissue injuries — groin, hamstring, calf — has kept him sidelined again.

General manager Ryan Poles didn’t hold back when asked about Gordon’s situation heading into camp. He basically said the future is simple: get right, then prove yourself all over again.

“A little bit of a repetitive situation that we’ve got to get fixed. And then when he gets back, he’s going to have to earn that trust back and that dependability,” Poles said, per Chris Emma of The Score. “Because we’ve got to put all the guys in a good position to be successful, and the up-and-down moving guys around is really tough. So, he’ll have to earn that back when he gets back.”

That’s not a throwaway line. Poles is making it clear that availability matters. Gordon has missed significant time in two of his three pro seasons, and the Bears have revamped their secondary with new faces. There are guys out there competing for reps right now, and Gordon isn’t one of them.

Ben Johnson’s message was even shorter

New head coach Ben Johnson was asked about Gordon and kept it simple. Two words. “Get healthy,” per Michal Dwojak of Bears Insider. No spin, no long explanation. Just the immediate priority.

The Bears brought in Johnson to bring some discipline and structure to a team that’s been floating in mediocrity. A player who can’t stay on the field doesn’t fit into that plan unless he can change something. And it sounds like Gordon’s latest issue — which the team hasn’t officially named but appears to be another soft-tissue problem — is starting to test the front office’s patience.

Gordon was drafted in the second round in 2022 out of Washington. He showed flashes as a rookie, with solid coverage numbers and a knack for breaking up passes. But the last two years have been defined by missed games and rehab stints. The Bears aren’t a team that can afford to wait forever, especially not with a defense that’s been rebuilt on paper.

The competition is real

If Gordon does get healthy soon, he’s not walking back into a starting spot. The Bears have added depth at cornerback, and guys like Tyrique Stevenson and Jaylon Johnson have locked down roles. Gordon will have to work his way back into the rotation, and there’s no guarantee the job is waiting for him.

Poles put it bluntly. Trust and dependability have to be earned. Gordon has talent, but talent doesn’t matter if you can’t take the field. The Bears are moving forward with or without him, and the message from the top is clear.

Get healthy. Then prove it.
