Barcelona Targets 16-Year-Old Manchester United Prospect Who Already Trained With First Team

Manchester United’s teenage goalkeeper Darlington Osuchukwu is reportedly on his way out of Old Trafford this summer, with Barcelona leading the chase for a player already familiar with Spanish football.

According to reports, the 16-year-old, who joined United at age 13 from Basque club Gazte Berriak, has decided not to sign a professional contract with the Red Devils. That decision has opened the door for a host of European clubs, including Barcelona, Reims, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Anderlecht.

Osuchukwu, a Spain under-17 international, has been a regular for United’s under-16 side and has even made the bench for the under-18s. More notably, he has trained with the first team on several occasions — a sign that the club once saw him as a future asset. But without a deal in place, he is now free to walk away.

From Basque Country to Manchester — and Maybe Back

Osuchukwu’s move back to Spain would bring him full circle. He originally left the country at 13, but Barcelona now sees an opportunity to bring him home. The report from Football Insider suggests the young stopper “had been earmarked for a huge future” at United, but could now return to his homeland and join the La Masia pipeline.

Teammates have already said their goodbyes. In May, Jaume Camacho posted a farewell message on Instagram alongside Osuchukwu with the caption: “End of an era bro, hasta pronto.” The message, shared by Camacho and his brother Josep, underscores the feeling that Osuchukwu’s departure has been on the horizon for some time.

United’s Goalkeeping Shuffle

The potential exit comes amid broader changes in United’s goalkeeping department. Altay Bayindir, the Turkish international, is expected to leave this summer, with interest from Süper Lig clubs. United is reportedly eyeing academy product Sam Johnstone — now at Wolverhampton Wanderers — as a veteran backup to Senne Lammens.

For Osuchukwu, the move to Barcelona would mark a significant step up in competition and prestige. But it also means leaving a club that gave him his first real platform in English football. United fans online have noted the irony of losing a player they believed was destined for the top — another reminder that even the best academy systems can’t keep everyone.

Barcelona’s interest is part of a broader summer push that also includes a potential renegotiation of Marcus Rashford’s loan terms, though United has so far refused to lower its €30 million asking price for the England forward. Unlike that saga, however, United has little leverage with Osuchukwu. If he wants to leave, the club can’t stop him.

The question now is whether Barcelona can close the deal — and whether Osuchukwu can fulfill the promise that once made him a name to watch at Manchester United.
