Bam Adebayo didn’t mince words when he talked about what Giannis Antetokounmpo brings to the Miami Heat. It’s not just the two MVP trophies or the championship ring. It’s the energy.
Speaking Tuesday at his annual back-to-school event in Miami, Adebayo opened up about how the blockbuster trade that brought Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. to South Beach has already changed the vibe inside the building. The Heat sent out Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis and three first-round picks to get the deal done. That’s a lot of futures, but Adebayo thinks it was worth it.
“I mean, everybody has seen the battles that we had,” Adebayo said, via The Miami Herald. “We got the same agent, and we talked about, like, what if it would happen? And now we’re to this point. So, I’m excited for the season. I’m excited to be his teammate. I’m excited for the city of Miami, and the energy we gained. And we’re looking to take that momentum into the season.”
Two Defensive Monsters, One Roster
Adebayo and Antetokounmpo have been going at each other for years. Playoff battles. Regular season scraps. Guys who absolutely hate losing to each other. Now they’re on the same side, and that should terrify the rest of the Eastern Conference.
Back at Antetokounmpo’s introductory press conference on July 16, he told reporters a story that says everything about how much respect he has for Adebayo. “Usually I get eight hours of sleep before I play anybody. With Bam, I got 12 hours, I had to be extra ready because I know he’ll go hard,” he said. That’s the kind of mutual respect that doesn’t happen overnight.
The Heat finished 10th in the East last season with a 43-39 record. That’s not Miami Heat basketball. That’s play-in territory, and nobody in that organization thinks that’s acceptable. Adding a two-time MVP tends to change expectations pretty fast.
What This Means for the East
Putting two elite defenders on the floor at the same time is a nice problem to have. Adebayo can guard anyone from guards to centers. Antetokounmpo has a Defensive Player of the Year award on his shelf. Together, they could make life miserable for the Celtics, Bucks and anyone else trying to make a run. The offensive fit is a question mark. Both guys like to operate in the paint. But good teams figure that out. Great players do.
Miami has been searching for that next gear since the Jimmy Butler era ran its course. This feels different. The energy Adebayo keeps talking about isn’t just hype. It’s real. And the rest of the league better be ready.
