Back-to-Back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Ditches Converse for Nike Signature Deal

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is officially swapping the star logo for the Swoosh. The Oklahoma City Thunder guard, fresh off winning his second consecutive MVP award, has signed with Nike, ending a six-year run with Converse that saw him evolve from an emerging talent into the face of a championship franchise.

Nike confirmed the move in a statement to Complex News, welcoming Gilgeous-Alexander into its signature basketball family. The brand released a video alongside Alexander that announced his departure from Converse and unveiled his new personal logo, marking the beginning of what promises to be a high-profile sneaker partnership.

“We are thrilled to welcome Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to the Nike Basketball signature family,” Nike said in the statement. “Coming after back-to-back MVP seasons, we are excited to build on Shai’s incredible impact with Converse as one of the most creative leaders in the game.”

End of an Era with Converse

Gilgeous-Alexander first joined Converse in 2020, a period when the brand was working to reestablish itself in basketball. He signed a contract extension in 2024 that was described at the time as “lucrative,” and was also given the title of Creative Director of Congress Basketball — Converse’s in-house basketball division.

Converse CEO Jared Carver praised Alexander’s influence when the extension was announced in April 2024. “At Converse, we serve creators. And Shai embodies every sense of the word. He is constantly pushing the edge of style, whether through his incredible play on the court, or his personal creativity off the court,” Carver said in a statement obtained by Shams Charania. “This expanded partnership is a natural progression of our collaboration, and we look forward to introducing Shai’s signature line and creating the next phase of Converse Basketball, together.”

In 2025, Converse released Alexander’s first signature sneaker, the Shai 001. That launch coincided with the Thunder’s championship run, and Alexander was featured on the cover of NBA 2K26 wearing a gold edition of the shoe — a peak moment for a player who was already becoming one of the league’s most marketable stars.

What This Means for Nike and the Sneaker World

The move places Alexander in a loaded Nike signature roster that includes LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Giannis Antetokounmpo — but his entry feels distinct. He’s not just a scorer; he’s a low-key style icon whose off-court fashion sense has made him a regular at Paris Fashion Week. Nike is betting that his creative credibility, combined with two MVPs and a ring, can translate into a sneaker line that resonates beyond basketball purists.

Industry insiders have noted that Alexander’s deal with Converse was one of the most unique in the league because of his creative control. Whether Nike grants him similar autonomy will be watched closely. The brand has not yet announced a release date for his signature shoe, but the partnership was described as a long-term commitment.

For the Thunder, this is another sign that their franchise cornerstone is ascending into a global icon. Oklahoma City is coming off a championship season, and Alexander’s sneaker switch — paired with his MVP hardware — reinforces that the team’s future is as bright as any in the league.
