The Texas Rangers are sitting at 43-42 and somehow leading the AL West. That’s not a typo. A division that looked winnable back in March has turned into a weird slog, and the Rangers are right in the thick of it. They want to get back to the World Series for the first time since 2023. And there’s a familiar face who might help them do it.
Aroldis Chapman is currently pitching for the Boston Red Sox, but according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, his name has come up in trade deadline conversations involving Texas. Feinsand wrote that the Rangers’ bullpen ranks dead last in the American League with 7.8 strikeouts per nine innings. That’s not great. Adding a hard-throwing lefty who still touches 103 mph would obviously help.
Chapman started 2023 with the Royals before the Rangers traded for him that summer. It worked out pretty well. He posted a 2.25 ERA in nine postseason appearances, and Texas won the whole thing. Bullpens win rings. Chapman was a piece of that puzzle.
Now he’s 38 and still effective. He’s got a 2.19 ERA with 16 saves for Boston this season. The guy hasn’t slowed down much. His stuff is still electric, and he’s proven he can handle the pressure of a playoff race.
The question is whether the Rangers want to pay the price. Boston is reportedly open to trading him, but they’re not giving him away. For a team that’s already spent big on guys like Corey Seager and Marcus Semien, another rental reliever might not seem like the splashiest move. But it’s the kind of move that wins October games.
Texas has other needs too. The rotation has been banged up. Jacob deGrom is still working his way back from Tommy John. Max Scherzer has been in and out of the lineup. But the bullpen is where the wound is bleeding most. Feinsand pointed that out directly. Chapman isn’t the only option out there, but he’s a guy who already knows the organization and the postseason vibe.
It’s not a done deal by any means. The Rangers haven’t tipped their hand yet. But if you’re looking for a reunion that makes sense on paper and in the clubhouse, this is the one.
