Anthony Rizzo Caught a Cubs Homer in the Bleachers. While Holding His Kid.

Anthony Rizzo is not on the Cubs anymore. But on Saturday at Wrigley Field, he might as well have been.

The former Chicago first baseman and 2016 World Series hero was sitting in the right-field bleachers with his young son when Michael Busch launched a solo shot off Twins starter Taj Bradley in the bottom of the first inning. The ball sailed straight toward Rizzo. He reached out with one hand — the other was busy holding his kid — and made the catch.

MLB shared the clip on social media. “Michael Busch hit a homer into the bleachers … Anthony Rizzo got the ball!” the league wrote. The video shows Rizzo calmly plucking the ball out of the air, then handing it off to his son. The kid looked a little confused. The crowd around them went nuts.

The weird timing of it all

Busch is the guy who replaced Rizzo at first base for the Cubs. Not directly — there were a few other guys in between. But he’s the one now. And here was Rizzo, still beloved in Chicago, catching the guy’s home run like it was no big deal. It was one of those moments that feels staged but absolutely wasn’t.

Rizzo spent nine seasons with the Cubs, helped break a 108-year curse, and was traded in 2021. He’s since played for the Yankees and is currently a free agent. But he still lives in Chicago in the offseason. And apparently, he still goes to games.

Cubs fans online had a field day with it. Some called it fate. Others joked that Rizzo was scouting his old position. A few pointed out that he probably has more home runs in Wrigley Field this year than some of the current Cubs (Busch is doing fine, for the record).

The game kept going after that. The Cubs and Twins were tied at the time. But for a second, the whole story was about a guy in the stands who used to own that stadium. And he didn’t even drop the ball.

The moment got passed around fast. Partly because it’s Rizzo. Partly because it’s Wrigley. And partly because watching a guy catch a major league homer while holding a toddler is just impressive. We’re not sure his son will remember it. But the internet definitely will.
