The Los Angeles Angels finally pulled the trigger. Reliever Chase Silseth and catcher Logan O’Hoppe are headed to the Texas Rangers for a minor league prospect, the team confirmed Tuesday. It’s the first move of what promises to be a busy trade deadline for an organization that’s been wandering in the wilderness.
Interim general manager John Mozeliak didn’t mince words about why the deal happened or what comes next.
“As we enter this trading period, one of the things we are focused on is understanding change,” Mozeliak told reporters, including MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger. “Clearly where the Angels are at right now, we need to do some things differently.”
Translation: The Angels are sellers. They’re one of the worst teams in baseball, and nobody in the front office is pretending otherwise anymore.
Silseth Was Having a Real Moment
The 26-year-old righty has quietly put together a breakout year out of the bullpen. In 47 appearances, Silseth posted a 2.72 ERA with 48 strikeouts across 39.2 innings. That’s the heaviest workload he’s seen since 2023, and the results were legit. He’s under team control through 2031, which made him an obvious target for contenders like Texas.
So the Angels got value. Silseth wasn’t part of their long-term plans anyway.
O’Hoppe Feels Like an Afterthought Now
It’s strange to write that sentence about a guy who was supposed to be the Angels’ catcher of the future. But O’Hoppe, also 26, has fallen off hard. Once considered a potential star behind the plate, he’s posted a .209/.271/.295 slash line this season with just four homers in 75 games. His defense has slipped too. He’s essentially a throw-in at this point, a change-of-scenery candidate who might benefit from a new coaching staff and a fresh start.
The Rangers are betting on the talent that was there once. The Angels are betting they don’t need it anymore.
Mozeliak made clear this isn’t a one-and-done kind of deadline. The roster is aging in parts, thin in others, and the farm system needs reinforcements. More trades feel inevitable before the August 3 cutoff. Whether the Angels can pull off a proper tear-down or just nibble around the edges will define the next phase of this franchise.
For now, they’ve made their first move. And they didn’t wait long to signal there’s plenty more coming.
