The Los Angeles Rams just wrapped up a blockbuster offseason that reshaped their roster and raised the stakes for 2026. Trading for Myles Garrett was the headliner. But the deal to pry Trent McDuffie away from Kansas City might be the one that defines how far this defense can go.
McDuffie, still only a few years into his NFL career, already has a reputation that travels around the league. An NFC scout told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that the cornerback can do just about everything. Perimeter. Slot. Man. Zone. Blitz. Cover 2. Jam at the line. Re-route receivers. The scout called him “one of the top coverage corners in the league” and specifically noted his “plus zone vision.”
That kind of praise doesn’t come cheap. And it explains why the Rams were willing to work out a trade with the Chiefs — a team that doesn’t usually let star defensive backs walk. McDuffie was a first-round pick in 2022 and has only gotten better since. He’s smart, physical, and rarely gets caught out of position. In a league where cornerback play can be volatile, he’s been consistently good.
But here’s the thing. The Rams aren’t just trying to be good. They’re trying to win a championship right now. Matthew Stafford is coming off an MVP season. Puka Nacua looks like the best receiver in football on any given Sunday. And the defense that got carved up by Seattle in last year’s NFC title game has been completely reloaded with Garrett and McDuffie leading the way.
Nobody is pretending the schedule gets any easier. The Rams open the season at home on September 10 against the San Francisco 49ers, a team that knows how to test a secondary. But the pieces are there. McDuffie gives defensive coordinator Raheem Morris the kind of versatile cover man who can travel with a team’s No. 1 option or lock down the slot and let everyone else play aggressive.
It’s rare for a team that made it to the conference championship to pull off an offseason like this. Usually you run it back, tweak a few things, hope for health. The Rams went the other way. They added a Hall of Fame pass rusher and a top-tier corner in the same window. That’s a statement. And if McDuffie plays the way that scout says he can, Los Angeles might just have the defense it needs to finish what it started.
