Alperen Sengun Shuts Down the Kevin Durant Beef Rumors Once and for All

Some narratives take on a life of their own. Especially in the NBA rumor mill, where a single whisper can snowball into a full-blown storyline by the time it hits social media. The one about Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun not getting along? That apparently had very little truth to it.

Let’s go back. Durant’s first season in Houston ended with a thud — a knee injury kept him sidelined while the Rockets got bounced by the Lakers in the first round. And before that injury, there was that whole group chat controversy. Leaked messages allegedly showed Durant making fun of teammates, including Sengun. Durant never exactly denied it. So naturally, people filled in the blanks themselves.

But Sengun, the 23-year-old center, sat down with Socrates Dergi and flat-out said the feud never happened.

“A perception suddenly formed out of nowhere. I’ve never had an argument with KD. Not even once. We’ve never raised our voices at each other. We always talk, and we always talk after games too. We especially talked after games we lost,” Sengun said.

He kept going. “Because we’re people who hate losing, you can see that on our faces during games. You can read it on KD’s face. You can read it on my face. You can read it on Ime’s (Udoka) face.”

Look, competitive people argue. That’s part of the deal. Sengun made it clear that disagreements happen in any locker room where winning matters. But a toxic internal divide? He’s not buying that.

“When we lost games, everyone looking from the outside tried to attack us and find any small thing they could pick on. They tried to pit us against each other. Attacking me through the coach. Because there are so many people out there who want to see us fail, you know?”

So where does that leave the Rockets? Well, Houston didn’t exactly fall apart. Durant and Sengun had moments last season where their two-man game looked legit. And now they get a full offseason to build on it. Fred VanVleet should be healthier. Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard are still on upward trajectories. That’s a lot of shooting and playmaking that defenses have to account for.

The noise about internal drama might have been good for clicks. But if Sengun is telling the truth — and there’s no reason to think he isn’t — then the Rockets are just a talented team that lost some close games and got picked apart from the outside. That’s a lot less dramatic than a locker room conspiracy. But it might be more dangerous for the rest of the West.
