Alicia Keys Set to Perform at Knicks Parade — 53 Years of Waiting Finally Gets Its Soundtrack

The New York Knicks are finally bringing a championship parade back to the city after more than five decades, and they’re making sure the soundtrack hits as hard as the confetti drop.

According to team owner James Dolan, Grammy-nominated singer Alicia Keys will perform at the Knicks’ victory parade ceremony. She’s expected to deliver her 2009 anthem “Empire State of Mind,” a track that has become as much a part of New York’s identity as the skyline itself. The song, originally recorded with Jay-Z, spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

More Than Just a Song

In a 2017 interview with Billboard, Keys explained how the track was initially a gamble. “When we first finished ‘Empire,’ we all wondered if it would be too ‘New York.’ We wondered if everyone would be able to understand it,” she said. “Little did we know EVERYONE would understand it because it’s not just about New York, it’s about the HOPE that New York represents; the possibility. The chance to follow your dreams no matter who you are or where you come from.”

She added: “When people sing the lyrics to that chorus they are reminded to dream as big as they possibly can! That’s what ‘Empire’ is about! It gives me chills! In these crazy times, I hope we stay a city (and a country) where that remains true.”

The Knicks’ Long Road Back

The championship itself was anything but predictable. The Knicks ended a 53-year title drought by taking down the San Antonio Spurs in five games. The series was highlighted by a 29-point comeback in Game 4 — the largest in NBA Finals history. That kind of resilience? It fits the “Empire State of Mind” narrative perfectly.

For a franchise that has weathered decades of jokes, bad contracts, and front-office chaos, this title run felt like something bigger than basketball. It was a reminder of what the city can rally behind when the moment is right.

What the Parade Means

Championship parades in New York are rare events. The last time the Knicks won, Lyndon B. Johnson was president, “The Sound of Music” was the highest-grossing film, and the Beatles had just landed in America. For the generation of fans who have only known the Knicks as a punchline, this parade is personal.

Keys performing “Empire State of Mind” isn’t just a concert booking — it’s a full-circle moment for a city that has spent years waiting to celebrate. The parade is expected to draw massive crowds, and hearing those opening piano chords will likely turn the streets into a massive sing-along.

No official date for the parade has been released yet, but the Knicks have confirmed the celebration will take place within the next two weeks.
