The Toronto Blue Jays finally have their catcher back, but the road to getting here was anything but smooth. Alejandro Kirk was activated from the 60-day injured list Tuesday night, marking his return after missing nearly two months following surgery on a broken left thumb.
Kirk suffered the injury in April and has only appeared in five games this season. The team officially announced the move on social media, writing, “C Alejandro Kirk reinstated from the 60-day IL and will be active tonight.” His return gives Toronto a much-needed boost behind the plate, where Brandon Valenzuela has held things together in his absence.
To make room on the roster, the Blue Jays designated veteran catcher Tyler Heineman for assignment. Heineman had been serving as the backup, but with Kirk back in the mix, the organization decided to go with the younger, more established option.
A Flurry of Roster Moves
The Kirk activation wasn’t the only transaction Toronto made. Outfielder Daulton Varsho was placed on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation, a move that could sideline him for at least a week. Varsho has been a key part of the Blue Jays’ outfield defense and provided some pop at the plate, so his absence will be felt.
In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays recalled infielder/outfielder Davis Schneider from Triple-A. Schneider has shown flashes of potential in the minors and will likely get playing time in a utility role while Varsho recovers. Additionally, right-hander Yariel Rodríguez cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A, giving the team depth in the pitching department.
Can the Blue Jays Find Their Identity?
Toronto sits at 33-36, third in the AL East, but the team isn’t panicking. Infielder Ernie Clement recently shared his belief that the best is yet to come. “Once we kind of figure out who we are as a team, firmly figure out our team identity, I think this team has a chance to be better than last year,” Clement said.
That confidence isn’t baseless. This is the same core group that went to Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. The Blue Jays know they have the talent to compete with anyone. The question is whether they can click at the right time and make a run in a tough division.
Kirk’s return is a step in that direction. If he can stay healthy and the offense finds its rhythm, Toronto could be a dangerous team down the stretch.
