Albert Breer Puts Money on Kyler Murray Over J.J. McCarthy. But He’s Not Counting the Kid Out.

Albert Breer Puts Money on Kyler Murray Over J.J. McCarthy. But He’s Not Counting the Kid Out.

If you thought the Vikings’ quarterback situation was settled, think again. Kyler Murray signed in free agency after his Arizona exit, and J.J. McCarthy has been in the building for over a year now. And according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, this thing is still wide open — even if the smart money says otherwise.

Breer went on record calling the battle a “let-the-best-man-win derby,” meaning Minnesota’s front office isn’t letting past investments dictate who gets the job. That matters. Because Murray came with a big contract, and McCarthy was a first-round pick. But the team has reportedly told both guys it’s a true competition, and Breer believes them.

“Most assume that Murray will win the competition, and if I had to bet, I’d agree,” Breer wrote. “But McCarthy’s got his shot now to show that with another year of experience, he’s playing with a greater and more calm command than he did a year ago, with a talented roster around him.”

The Case for Kyler

Murray’s resume speaks for itself. He’s been a Pro Bowler. He’s won games with his arm and his legs. And after a stretch of injuries in Arizona, he played 15 games last season and looked like his old self. The Vikings clearly see him as a bridge to something — maybe a deep playoff run, maybe a mentor for McCarthy. Either way, he’s the favorite.

But here’s the thing: the favorite doesn’t always win. McCarthy’s been turning heads at minicamp. Coaches have noted his improved footwork and his comfort in Kevin O’Connell’s system. And the roster around him? Better than anything he had in college at Michigan. Justin Jefferson alone changes everything for a young quarterback.

Is There Friction?

There have been a few quotes from McCarthy that raised eyebrows. Nothing dramatic, but enough that people wondered if there’s some tension between him and Murray. Neither guy has said anything directly negative. But competition like this doesn’t always stay friendly. So far, it hasn’t been a problem. But these things can simmer.

The Vikings have more than two months before the season starts. That’s a lot of practice reps. A lot of preseason snaps. And a lot of time for O’Connell to see which guy gives this team the best shot. Murray’s experience gives him the edge today. But McCarthy’s trajectory — another year older, another year smarter, and a better supporting cast — means no one should be surprised if this thing goes down to the wire.

Breer’s bet is on Murray. But he’s not tearing up the ticket on McCarthy. Neither should anyone else.
