Ahmad Hardy’s Shooting Recovery Has a Timeline Now. Missouri’s Season Depends on It.

Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy took a bullet in the leg at a Mississippi concert this offseason. He needed surgery. And for weeks, nobody knew when — or if — he’d be ready for the 2026 season.

Now there’s an actual timeline. Eli Drinkwitz dropped it at SEC Media Days: Hardy has been medically cleared, but he’s still weeks away from full contact. Drinwitz told Brett McMurphy of On3 Sports the return-to-play progression could take five to eight weeks.

That puts Hardy’s availability somewhere between late August and mid-September. Missouri opens the season on August 29 against Eastern Michigan. Best case, Hardy misses the opener and a few more games. Worst case, he’s out until October. The Tigers have not confirmed a specific target date.

Why Hardy’s return matters more than usual

Missouri doesn’t have the depth of Georgia or Alabama. Drinkwitz has been building the program with less than the SEC’s superpowers, so individual stars carry more weight. Hardy is the biggest of them all. In 2025, his first season in Columbia after transferring from Louisiana-Monroe, he ran for 1,649 yards and 16 touchdowns. That was on 256 carries for an offense that couldn’t throw the ball consistently. Defenses loaded the box and he still averaged 6.4 yards per carry.

Before the shooting, Hardy was a consensus Doak Walker Award favorite and a projected first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. That draft stock isn’t gone, but the calculus has changed. He has to show he’s still the same back after a gunshot wound. The medical clearance is a good sign, but full-contact practice and live game reps will tell the real story.

Quarterback change could help

Missouri has Ole Miss transfer Austin Simmons at quarterback this season. If Simmons can give the passing game a pulse — something the Tigers lacked in 2025 — that takes some pressure off Hardy immediately. Defenses won’t be able to key on the run the way they did last fall. That’s the hope anyway.

Hardy is still the engine. But for the first time in a while, Missouri’s offense might have two gears. Assuming the engine is back from the shop on time.
