After 43 Years Behind the Mic, the Lakers’ Voice Is Stepping Aside — but Not Leaving

For more than four decades, one voice has echoed through the rafters of the Forum and Crypto.com Arena, announcing every Laker bucket, every timeout, every lineup change. That voice is about to go silent on game nights — but its owner isn’t going far.

Lawrence Tanter, the iconic public address announcer for the Los Angeles Lakers, is retiring from his courtside role after 43 seasons. The team made the announcement Tuesday, and while the news might surprise fans who associate his deep, steady cadence with the franchise’s greatest triumphs, Tanter isn’t walking away entirely.

According to a report from Law Murray of The Athletic, Tanter will transition into a newly created position as Special Advisor for Game Presentation. In that capacity, he will serve as a mentor to whoever takes over the PA microphone, ensuring the Lakers’ gameday atmosphere remains at the elite level he helped define.

“Since the 1980s, LT narrated every chapter of Lakers basketball, connecting generations of fans, players, coaches, and staff while becoming a trusted and unforgettable part of the Lakers experience,” team governor Jeanie Buss said in an official statement. “I am incredibly grateful for everything he has given to this franchise.”

A Legacy That Spans Showtime to LeBron

Tanter’s tenure began during the Magic Johnson-Kareem Abdul-Jabbar era and carried through the Shaq-Kobe dynasty, the Pau Gasol championship years, and into the current LeBron James-Anthony Davis era. He called games through five decades, multiple arena changes, and 17 NBA Finals appearances. His voice became as synonymous with Lakers basketball as the gold jerseys and the purple trim.

The Lakers’ press release described Tanter’s new role as one that allows him to “lend his unparalleled expertise and institutional knowledge to help shape the future of the Lakers’ game presentation experience.” In practical terms, that means the next PA announcer will have a direct line to the man who set the standard.

“Following 43 seasons behind the courtside microphone, the beloved ‘Voice of the Lakers’ will retire his gameday role,” the team said. Tanter’s departure from the mic marks the end of an era, but his continued presence as an advisor signals that the franchise values continuity and tradition even as it looks ahead.

What This Means for Lakers Fans — and the Team’s Offseason

While Tanter’s retirement is a sentimental moment, it arrives at a busy time for the Lakers front office, which is juggling the NBA Draft, free agency, and potential trades. The team has not yet named a replacement for Tanter, and likely won’t rush that decision given the advisor role will help guide the search.

Fans on social media expressed a mix of gratitude and nostalgia Tuesday, with many noting that Tanter’s voice was the soundtrack to their childhoods. Some pointed out that hearing him announce LeBron James’ name felt like a full-circle moment, given Tanter had announced Kareem’s name decades earlier.

For now, the Lakers’ game night experience will change for the first time in 43 years. But the man who shaped it isn’t done shaping it — he’s just moving to a different seat.
