Adley Rutschman on Trade Rumors: ‘That Stuff Hurts My Head to Think About’

Adley Rutschman has been the face of the Baltimore Orioles since they drafted him first overall in 2019. He’s the All-Star catcher, the franchise cornerstone, the guy they built around. But with the Orioles sitting at 46-51 and 11.5 games back of the Rays in the AL East, the rumors have started creeping in. Could they actually trade him?

Rutschman addressed that speculation directly with MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. His answer wasn’t defiant or dismissive. It was honest.

“I’m just focused on winning games,” Rutschman said. “That stuff hurts my head to think about.”

He’s not wrong to feel that way. The Orioles aren’t dead yet. They’re two games back of the Mariners and Twins for the final AL Wild Card spot. That’s not nothing. But the math gets trickier when you look at the schedule. Before the July 30 trade deadline, Baltimore has 15 games left. Six of them are on the road starting with the Astros, who are a half-game ahead of them. Then it’s the Red Sox, who lead Baltimore by a game and a half. Then a series against the Braves and another against the Phillies. That’s a gauntlet.

If the Orioles fall off in that stretch, the front office might face a real decision. Rutschman is under team control through 2027. He’s not a rental. But teams in this situation sometimes pivot early if they don’t think they can extend him. And Rutschman hasn’t signed an extension yet. No one’s said he’s available. But the fact that he’s even addressing trade rumors means those conversations are happening somewhere in the background.

It’s worth remembering that Rutschman is still only 26. He’s the kind of player you build around for a decade, not someone you flip for prospects. But the Orioles have done some unconventional things with their roster lately. They’ve been aggressive with young talent, but they’ve also been careful about long-term commitments. Whether that changes with their star catcher remains to be seen.

For now, Rutschman is trying to block out the noise. He’s got games to play and a team that’s just close enough to the playoff picture to make things interesting. The next two weeks will tell a lot about which direction Baltimore is headed.
