A Surprising Trade That Makes Sense for Both the Cardinals and Twins

The St. Louis Cardinals entered 2026 with modest expectations, a roster built more for tomorrow than today. Yet here they are, sitting second in the National League Central and holding a Wild Card spot as June winds down. The front office now faces a decision that could define the season — and the franchise’s long-term direction.

It’s not every year a rebuilding team finds itself in contention by midseason. The Cardinals have a legitimate shot at the postseason, and that changes the calculus at the trade deadline. According to team insiders, the club is weighing whether to make a serious push or stay the course. A big swing for a starting pitcher could tip the scales.

One name that keeps surfacing in league-wide trade chatter: Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan. The 2025 All-Star is having another strong season, posting a 3.17 ERA with 92 strikeouts across 15 starts. What makes him especially appealing is his contract situation — a mutual option for 2027 that likely sends him to free agency. That reduces his trade cost while still bringing a proven arm to a contender.

What a Deal Could Look Like

According to front office speculation, the Twins would want a package of three prospects for Ryan. A proposed trade that fits both teams’ needs includes right-handers Jurrangelo Cijntje and Tink Hence, plus outfield prospect Emmanuel Luna. Cijntje, the Cardinals’ No. 4 prospect per MLB.com, is a 23-year-old switch-pitcher expected to focus on right-handed throwing. His fastball plays, but command remains a work in progress. Hence, also 23, offers a plus changeup and is close to MLB-ready. Luna, just 17, brings power and speed but won’t arrive until 2031 at the earliest.

The Cardinals would hold onto their top three prospects, a key detail for a team still rebuilding its farm system. Losing Cijntje stings, but adding Ryan to a rotation that could use a veteran presence in the second half makes sense for a club trying to win now without mortgaging the future.

Will This Trade Actually Happen?

The Twins haven’t confirmed they’re shopping Ryan, but league insiders expect him to be available. The question is whether the Cardinals will act. St. Louis likely won’t chase a rental like Tarik Skubal, whose price tag would empty the prospect cupboard. Ryan represents a middle ground — a controllable All-Star who won’t cost the organization’s top assets and won’t derail the rebuild if the Cardinals falter.

This isn’t a guaranteed blockbuster. But for two teams with complementary needs, the fit is cleaner than most. If St. Louis decides to buy, Joe Ryan may be the perfect target.
