The Knicks finally won a championship after 53 years. And one fan apparently decided that the best way to commemorate the moment was to steal a city-owned garbage can.
Video surfaced over the weekend showing someone dumping the contents of a blue-and-orange Knicks-themed trash can onto a New York City sidewalk. Then they just walked away with the bin. Like it was a souvenir. Like nobody would notice.
Barstool Sports shared the clip and it spread fast. The caption read: “As expected, Knicks fans were stealing the signature blue and orange garbage cans during the parade yesterday.”
Then a second video appeared. This time the fan was on the subway, looking pretty pleased with herself, the stolen can sitting next to her. The person who posted it added a caption: “She got the best souvenir.”

People online had opinions. A lot of them. One person replied to Barstool’s post with: “I repeat: New Yorkers are the cockroaches of our country!” Another wrote: “Stealing a city trash can and dumping the garbage straight onto the street is absolute nasty work.”
It’s not like the city didn’t see this coming. The Knicks parade on June 18 brought huge crowds into lower Manhattan. Fans were fired up. The team had just beaten the San Antonio Spurs in five games to win the NBA Finals, coming back from a 29-point deficit in Game 4 to take control of the series. So yeah, emotions were high.
But stealing a trash can? A Department of Sanitation trash can that the city paid for and that other people have to use?
For anyone who actually wants a Knicks-themed can without the risk of a petty larceny charge, there is a legal option. The DSNY officially licensed version is available through OnlyNY. A full-size can runs $168 and ships in October 2026, just in time for the regular season. There’s also a smaller pen holder version for $58, also shipping in early October.
So far, no word on whether the NYPD or the sanitation department plans to track down the woman in the video. But the internet has already sentenced her. And frankly, the jury seems pretty unanimous.
