A 4-Star WR Just Picked Florida Over Miami and Michigan. Here’s Why It Matters.

Jon Sumrall hasn’t even coached a game at Florida yet, and he’s already stacking wins on the recruiting trail. Sunday, four-star wide receiver Armani Strong announced his commitment to the Gators, choosing them over a list of programs that reads like a College Football Playoff bracket.

Strong is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound receiver out of Florida. He picked the Gators over Miami, USC, Notre Dame and Michigan, according to Rivals. That’s not a soft offer list. Those are blue-bloods and recent contenders, and Florida beat them all for a kid who lives in the state.

Strong’s Early Call

This is an early commitment for Strong, who’s part of the 2028 class. He visited Gainesville earlier this month for a camp and Florida’s “Grill in the Ville” recruiting cookout. Something about that trip clicked. Strong told Rivals he’d been keeping in close touch with the staff for months. After spending time around the new-look SEC program, he decided he didn’t need to wait.

Strong announced the news himself with a message that should make Gators fans happy: “No zone safe, no corner safe. The Swamp just got more explosive!! Committed, let’s go!”

He’s the first player in Florida’s 2028 recruiting class. First commit sets a tone, and this one says Florida’s still a factor for in-state talent even with a new coaching staff still settling in.

Sumrall’s Fast Start

Sumrall took over after Florida fired Billy Napier early in the 2025 season. Napier couldn’t get the program out of its rut in the SEC. Sumrall came in after a run at Tulane where he took the Green Wave to the College Football Playoff in 2025. Before that, he had a solid stint at Troy. The guy knows how to win at places where winning is harder than it should be.

His message since arriving in Gainesville has been direct. “Our expectation is for our guys to expect to win every freaking time we take the field,” Sumrall said, per Saturday Down South.

Landing a four-star receiver who had his pick of top-tier programs is the kind of early evidence that recruits are buying what he’s selling. Strong isn’t just a name on a commitment list. He’s a sign that Florida can still go toe-to-toe with the big dogs for the guys who live right down the road.

Florida opens the 2026 season on September 5 against Florida Atlantic. By then, Strong will have had plenty of time to help the coaching staff recruit the rest of his class.
