Harry Maguire Compares Elliot Anderson to Declan Rice as £130M Bids Loom

Harry Maguire sees something familiar in Elliot Anderson. And it’s not just the accent or the fact that they both play midfield for England.

The Nottingham Forest and England midfielder is at the center of a transfer saga that keeps getting louder. Manchester City is reportedly ready to push hard for him, with multiple bids already turned down by Forest. One of those offers was worth more than £120 million, with £106 million up front. Word around the industry is that a bid closer to £130 million might finally get it done.

Maguire, speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, didn’t hold back on the comparison that caught everyone’s attention.

“I’ve heard there are many clubs abroad after him as well,” Maguire said. “He’s got absolutely everything. He reminds me of Declan Rice in some aspects in terms of his profile.”

That’s a heavy comparison. Rice has been one of the best holding midfielders in the world for years. But Maguire broke down why he thinks Anderson fits that mold.

“He’s good on the ball, he can drive with the ball. He’s got an eye for goal as well, to say he’s playing number six at the minute, but he’s one of those, I think he could play 10, 8, 6.”

Vieira Weighs In on Anderson’s Game

Patrick Vieira was sitting next to Maguire on that podcast, and his take was just as interesting. The former Arsenal captain knows a thing or two about playing that position.

“Anderson had everything that I like about the holding midfielder because he is really aggressive, and he’s a ball winner,” Vieira said. “He dictated the game (against Croatia), but even in possession, he’s not hiding.”

That assessment tracks with what scouts have been saying. Anderson is comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, and he doesn’t disappear when a game gets physical.

The Medical Chatter While on World Cup Duty

Here’s where the rumors get a little wild. Anderson is currently in the United States with England for the World Cup. And there’s talk that a medical could happen while he’s over there. That would speed things up considerably if a deal gets agreed.

Manchester United, who were linked earlier in the window, have reportedly pulled out of the race. That leaves City as the most likely Premier League suitor, though interest from clubs abroad hasn’t gone away either.

Forest have been firm so far. They’re not in a rush to sell a homegrown talent who’s only getting better. But at a certain number, every club has a price. The question is whether City’s next offer hits that number.
