The scene outside NRG Stadium on Saturday looked like someone spilled a giant vat of orange paint across downtown Houston. Dutch fans, thousands upon thousands of them, marched toward the stadium hours before kickoff against Sweden. Local police estimated the crowd at nearly 30,000 people. And somewhere in that sea of orange, a horse was walking down the hallway.
Yes. A horse.
Photos and videos from the fan march show what appears to be a full-sized horse wandering through the concourse, flanked by Oranje supporters in their signature bright shirts, face paint, and giant foam hats. Nobody seemed bothered by it. In fact, the horse looked pretty calm, all things considered. The internet, predictably, lost its collective mind.
Old faces, new chaos
Wesley Sneijder and Edwin van der Sar were spotted in the crowd too, both grinning and soaking it in. Sneijder, who won a World Cup bronze and a Champions League with Inter Milan, was reportedly holding a beer and singing along. Van der Sar just stood there smiling, which is basically his brand.
The Dutch are legendary for turning international tournaments into a traveling carnival. They bring the noise, the color, and apparently the livestock. This is the same fanbase that turned a fan zone in Qatar into a dance floor two years ago. Houston was just the latest stop.
The match itself? Netherlands beat Sweden 2-1. But honestly, the pregame was the main event. The Oranje fans turned a routine group stage game into something that felt like a festival. The horse was just the punchline.
Houston police said there were no major incidents reported. The horse, presumably, was not charged with anything.
