Nicky Butt Has One Big Concern About Man United’s Potential Summerville Deal

Manchester United is pushing to add more firepower out wide this summer. The club already has a £35 million deal for Atalanta’s Ederson locked in and is working on an £85 million move for Mateus Fernandes to strengthen the midfield. But the front office is also looking at the left wing, and West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville has emerged as a serious target.

Reports from Italian journalist Nicolo Schira say United has opened talks with the Hammers and offered the Dutch winger a five-year contract that runs through 2031 with an option for 2032. The Athletic’s David Ornstein has previously reported that West Ham is holding out for a fee close to £50 million for the 24-year-old, who is under contract in London until June 2029.

Butt Questions the Consistency

Former United midfielder Nicky Butt isn’t sold on Summerville as a weekly starter, though. He sees the talent but has one clear reservation.

“He’s an explosive player, he’s good to watch, but I don’t think he’s consistent enough,” Butt said. “However, the money shouldn’t be a lot to get him, and United have to build a squad. It can’t be all about going and getting the superstar signings.”

Butt pointed to Summerville’s performance for the Netherlands in their first World Cup game as proof of the upside. But he also made it clear that being a spark plug off the bench is one thing and being a reliable presence week to week is another.

“Summerville was brilliant for the Netherlands in the first game, so he could potentially start every week for Man United. I’m looking at him thinking he’s got to get a lot more consistent to get to the next level,” Butt added. “But I’d still definitely look at signing a player like him. We’ve got to build the squad, the bench has got to be stronger.”

Depth Over Star Power

This all ties into a bigger issue at Old Trafford. United hasn’t had a deep enough bench in years. Butt remembers last season’s home loss to Leeds as a symptom of that problem.

“When United played Leeds at Old Trafford last season and they got beat, the players on the bench and around the squad weren’t good enough,” he said. “When they’re all fit they’re really good but they still need to build the squad so I’d be going for some players like that as well.”

Summerville’s potential arrival also depends on what happens with Marcus Rashford. Barcelona didn’t trigger the €30 million buy option on his loan, and reports suggest manager Michael Carrick wants to work with the forward at Old Trafford. If Rashford stays, Summerville might be more of a rotational piece than a starter. But if Rashford goes, that left wing spot opens up.

United has made inquiries about Summerville’s situation, according to Ornstein, and the club is clearly weighing its options. The question is whether they see him as a £50 million difference-maker or just another body for the bench. Based on Butt’s take, the answer might be somewhere in between.
