Noussair Mazraoui didn’t light up the scoreboard against Scotland on Friday. He didn’t have to. What he did was exactly what Morocco needed in a tense, scrappy World Cup group-stage match: he made life miserable for the other team.
The Manchester United full-back played all 90 minutes at left-back, helping Morocco secure a 1-0 win off an early goal from Ismael Saibari. Saibari scored just 72 seconds in, the kind of start that lets a team settle into a game plan instead of chasing one. And Morocco did exactly that — they controlled the tempo, absorbed pressure when needed, and never really let Scotland breathe.
Mazraoui’s quiet masterclass
The 28-year-old isn’t known for flashy stats, but the numbers tell a story anyway. He finished with 70 touches, completed 54 passes at a 94% clip, and hit both of his long-ball attempts. He won two of four ground duels and one of two in the air. He made three clearances. He committed one foul and drew two. Scotland didn’t manage a single shot on target all game.
That last stat is the important one. Morocco’s defensive shape was disciplined, and Mazraoui was a big part of that. He’s not a natural left-back — he’s right-footed and has played both sides throughout his career — but he looked completely at home there. He even filled in at center-back for United last season against Chelsea in a 1-0 win.
What this means for United
Manchester United has a left-back problem. Luke Shaw had a strong campaign last year, but he’s about to turn 31, and his injury history is long enough to make any fan nervous. With a packed schedule coming, United needs options. Mazraoui showing he can start and dominate at left-back in a World Cup setting is exactly the kind of insurance the club needs.
(But) the question is whether he offers enough going forward for Michael Carrick’s system. Against Scotland, he attempted one cross and it didn’t find a teammate. He wasn’t an attacking threat. For a team that needs width and service from full-backs, that could be an issue. Still, as a stop-gap solution? He’s proving he can handle the defensive side at the highest level.
Morocco now sits in a strong position to advance from the group after drawing with Brazil and beating Scotland. Saibari, by the way, is reportedly headed to Bayern Munich this summer as a cheaper alternative to Marcus Rashford — a name United fans will remember from transfer rumors. But Friday belonged to the defense, and Mazraoui was at the center of it.
