Jayson Tatum Might Be the Only Asset That Keeps Giannis Antetokounmpo Out of Miami

Jayson Tatum Might Be the Only Asset That Keeps Giannis Antetokounmpo Out of Miami

A few things happened at the end of Boston’s first-round collapse to Philadelphia that don’t normally happen. Jayson Tatum was in street clothes. Joel Embiid finally beat the Celtics. And Tatum shared a laugh with Embiid on the court after Game 7. That moment didn’t sit well with some fans, but it probably won’t matter much when Brad Stevens picks up the phone this week.

The real story is Giannis Antetokounmpo. And the real tension is whether Boston trades Jaylen Brown for him.

Let’s start with what we actually know. The Bucks are headed for a breakup. It’s not if, it’s when. The Celtics lost a 3-1 series lead for the first time in franchise history. Change is coming. And Milwaukee’s two-time MVP has been linked to Boston since before the season ended.

There’s a reported wrinkle that makes this more interesting than a standard superstar trade. Giannis and Jayson Tatum share a skills coach in Drew Hanlen. According to league sources cited by The Stein Line, Antetokounmpo is believed to have a real level of interest in Boston, not just the Heat. That’s not nothing. Miami has been the favorite for months, but Boston might have something the Heat can’t match: Tatum himself.

Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor said the Celtics are willing to trade anyone not named Tatum. That includes Brown. The problem? Milwaukee reportedly doesn’t want Brown as the central return. They want picks and multiple pieces. So Boston would need a third team — the Hawks, Blazers and Clippers have been mentioned — to take Brown and send assets to the Bucks.

Here’s where it gets tricky for Miami. If a third team can put together a better package than the Heat can offer, Giannis might choose Boston over Bam Adebayo and Erik Spoelstra. And if you’re Antetokounmpo, the math is simple: Tatum gives you a better shot at beating the defending champion Knicks than any other available wing in the league.

There’s also the question of how Brown fits into all this. He just called the 2025-26 season his favorite. He led a depleted Celtics roster to one of the league’s best records while Tatum recovered from an Achilles injury. But when Tatum came back, the rotation shifted. Brown’s role changed. And now his name is everywhere in trade rumors.

Brown and Tatum aren’t close off the court. That’s not a secret. They won a title together in 2024, but the roster around them has changed significantly since then. Al Horford, Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis are gone. The Celtics need an answer, and they need it soon. The draft is days away.

If Giannis is serious about Boston, he’s probably already talking to Tatum. If he’s not, that conversation is coming. Because the clock is ticking on a decision that could reshape the Eastern Conference for years.
