West Ham Just Got Relegated. Now Manchester United Wants Their Best Player for Cheap.

Manchester United has officially kicked off talks to sign Crysencio Summerville from West Ham United. According to transfer reporter Nico Schira, United offered a contract that runs through 2031 with an option for 2032. That is serious long-term commitment for a 24-year-old winger.

The timing is everything. Summerville turned heads at the World Cup in North America with that curling goal against Japan. On the season, he finished with seven goals and five assists for West Ham. Solid numbers, but not world-beating. Then West Ham got relegated. That changes the math completely.

Why United is pushing now

Premier League clubs know West Ham has to sell. Relegation destroys your leverage. The London Stadium board is staring down a massive revenue gap and a squad that costs Premier League money to run on Championship income. Summerville is their most liquid asset. United knows this. They’re trying to get him before a bidding war breaks out.

But here’s the thing. West Ham doesn’t have to sell cheap. Summerville still has years left on his current deal. The club is reportedly holding out for close to £50 million. That’s a lot for a guy with 12 goal involvements in a relegation season. But the market has never been rational about young wingers with a World Cup highlight reel.

Koeman has him in the Netherlands setup now. That only helps the price tag. International exposure raises the floor. If he scores one more goal for Oranje, that valuation climbs again.

West Ham should play hardball

Roma is circling too. Gasperini wants Summerville on his left flank. If West Ham can get two serious suitors in a room, that’s the path to a real payday. Every extra million they squeeze out helps rebuild a roster that’s about to be picked clean in the Championship grind.

United’s initial offer is reportedly low. Shockingly low for a club of their resources. West Ham should hang up. Relegation is brutal, but panic selling is how you become a yo-yo club. Get the Mancunians and the Italians competing. Let the market set the price, not United’s accountants.

The Championship is a war of attrition. It eats teams alive. But West Ham has one thing going for them: time. They don’t have to sell on day one. They don’t have to sell to the first bidder. They just have to be smarter than they were in the boardroom this season.
